The public is not welcome, but a female staff member was very kind to answer our questions about the birds and facility. Next door is a bird aviary to rehabilitate injured birds. It was good for our boys to see that places like this exist. The male volunteer there on Saturday mornings was friendly and passionate while answering all our questions about the animals and the facility. The 77 volunteers are there because they love helping the animals – and it shows. There are 80 workers there throughout the week but only 3 are paid staff. There are several different pens which currently house seals and sea lions. The Marine Mammal Care Center (where they bring in sick, injured, or malnourished marine mammals in order to rehabilitate and release) was small but great. They are only about a mile away from each other, and they are both small enough to visit both in the same morning. However, it worked out great to visit these two places on the same day. We had planned on only visiting the Marine Mammal Care Center, but the facility was much smaller than we expected. Today we visited two places in San Pedro: the Marine Mammal Care Center and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.
