![]() ‘Resurrection Hero’ is the step where the hero has a second mission using all he has learned, this is portrayed by Shrek crashing Lord Farquad and Princess Fiona’s wedding and declares his love for her. The hero returns to his or her old life, known as the ‘The Road Back’, an example of this step in this film is when Shrek brings Fiona to Lord Farquad and he returns to the swamp. ‘Reward’ follows this which is when Shrek and Fiona begin to get along and Shrek starts to have feelings for Fiona. The ‘Ordeal’ step in Shrek is when he finds out she is an Ogre by night. The setback is Princess Fiona didn’t want to be rescued by Shrek and becomes difficult to bring back to the land of Far Far Away to Lord Farquad. ‘Approach to the Inmost Cave’ is step seven and is any setbacks along the journey. Donkey being Shrek’s Allie, the dragon being the enemy and the overall test of rescuing the princess. ‘Tests, Allies and Enemies’ is step six which is mixed in with step five a bit. In Shrek, his quest starts by him crossing an unstable bridge and then onto slaying a dragon before he gets to the princess’s room in the tower. After this we have ‘Crossing the Threshold’ which is where the hero actually starts his big quest. Step four is ‘Meeting the Mentor’ which is the step where the hero meets a sidekick or supernatural aid, in this films case, Shrek meets a talking donkey named Donkey to help him along the way. Shrek isn’t too keen on going in the first place but Lord Farquad blackmails him into doing it for him by using his swamps well-being against him. ‘Refusal to Call’ is the next step which is defined by its name really, due to fear usually. Shrek’s challenge is to save Princess Fiona as a favour to Lord Farquad from a tower. The second step is ‘Call to Adventure’, the hero is presented with a challenge. ![]() We see the main character, Shrek the Ogre, sitting in his swamp going about his day and enjoying his own company. ![]() This is incorporated in the film Shrek by the opening credits and the first scene. The first step is ‘Ordinary World’ which is hero’s life before the adventure to take place. There are twelve steps of a hero’s journey.
